Historical-biographical profile: Born in Imola in 1935, Augusto Palmonari graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1960 from the University of Bologna, and later specialised in Neurology and Psychiatry at the same university in 1963. He was assistant to the Professor of Psychology Renzo Canestrari at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Bologna from 1961 to 1969, when he was appointed assistant lecturer in Social Psychology at the Faculty of Political Science at the same university. He became a full professor in 1980, at the Department of Psychology of the University of Bologna, which he helped found - with Marco Walter Battacchi and Guido Sarchielli - in those very years, together with the relevant degree programme, within the Faculty of Medicine. He then moved on to the Faculty of Psychology at the same university, once it was established in 1996. After retiring in 2010 and receiving an honorary degree in Education and Psychology from the University of Geneva, he accepted an appointment as professor emeritus in 2011. He died in Bologna in 2016.
In addition to establishing collaborations with prestigious universities and study and research centres in Europe and the United States - working with Henri Tajfel, Serge Moscovici, Jos Jaspars and Willem Doise, among others - he was one of the leaders of Italian and European social psychology. His scientific production mainly concerns social representations, personal and social identity, social groups, social influence and the psychology of adolescence.
